Jeronimo Monastery & Church

The St. Jerome Monastery and Church are a symbol of the birth of Portugal's Golden Age, where world-famous voyages began and concluded with holy prayers. Notably, Vasco da Gama sought a safe voyage in the chapel located within this church, and his tomb stands as a testament to his ambition to discover a direct route to India. Opposite to his tomb is the memorial for Luis de Camoes, who holds the title of Portugal's Shakespeare. (Please click on the picture of the slide to view it in full screen.)

The carvings found in Jeronimo Monastery include a cricket, gargoyle creatures, an armillary sphere above the dog, and a carrack ship.
