Baxia to Alfama

The briny village of Alfama was home to fishermen, seamen, and the poet Luis de Camoes, who wrote, "Our lips meet easily, high across the street." However, navigating the district's daunting stairs, hills, and uneven terrain can be a challenge. Nonetheless, the entire area is photogenic, providing a melancholic backdrop of timeless memory.

Starting from Avenida Liberdade, one can take the Metro blue line to Restauradores station. From there, pass Rossio station and walk towards Convento do Carmo. Behind the convent is the Santa Justa elevator, which offers a great view of Barrio Alto. Descend from the elevator to explore the charming Alfama neighborhood, with its stairs, cafes, and historic buildings. Don't miss the panoramic view of Alfama from St. Vincent statue at Largo Portas do Sol. Visitors can then choose to take a bus, taxi, trolley or tuk tuk to the Castle of King George or walk to Lisbon Cathedral, stopping at a cafe along the way.

Afternoon was free time to choose our own exploration.

Barbara, Rick and other friends set off to the Tile Museum or Museu Nacional do Azulejo.

Lunch

For those who want to explore Lisbon outdoor restaurants, we recommend visiting Mercado Baxia and trying the famous bacalhau at Restaurante Beira-Gare and A Ginjinha bar, both of which were featured in the video. These places are conveniently located around Rossio Station.

Dinner

In the evening, we enjoyed a Fado dinner together. As a group, we took the Gloria Funicular up to the Miradouro de Sao Pedro de Alcantara to take in Lisbon's best view. From this beautiful lookout, we walked to our restaurant in the midst of the vibrant evening life of Bairro Alto.

"Three different fado singers delivered emotional and stirring performances during dinner. Although the lyrics were in Portuguese, the performers' facial expressions and vocal tones effectively conveyed the content, enabling everyone to understand the emotions and stories behind the songs." Larry.
