Batalha

In 1385, King Joao I built a new church and monastery to thank the Virgin Mary for a victory against the Spanish invasion that happened in that area. It took 200 years to complete and is considered some of Portugal's best examples of Gothic architecture with Manueline decoration. The Monastery of Santa Maria in Batalha commemorates Portugal's independence and is home to the tombs of King Joao and Queen Philipa, as well as their son Prince Henry Navigator and other royal princes. These tombs can be found in the Chapel of Founders within the monastery, which also boasts impressive stained glass windows that enhance the church's architecture.

Upon arriving at the bus station in Batalha, which is situated on Rua do Moinho Da Villa (see picture) and next to the Supermarket Intermarche, visitors can reach the monastery by taking a leisurely 10-minute walk down to Praca Mouzinho de Albuquerque. The TI is located behind .

Batalha doesn't have an official locker, but if you ask Ms. Nelia at the TI nicely, you can leave your luggage with her. When I arrived in Portugal before the Heart of Portugal tour started, Ms. Nelia was extremely helpful in organizing all of my visits around Nazaré .
