Alcobaça

Founded in 1153, Alcobaça Monastery is a commemoration of the expulsion of the Moors. The Baroque-style architecture showcases a blend of Gothic influence and is the largest church in Portugal. The church is home to the tombs of King Pedro and Queen Ines, who represent the tragic love story of Portugal's own Romeo and Juliet. This is an interesting facet of Portuguese literature that predates Shakespeare but is largely unknown to the world.

Directions

Alcobaça is easily accessible by bus from any city. To reach Alcobaça, locate the bus station in your departure city and follow the Bus Connection instructions outlined on the Traveling from Lisbon.

Upon arriving at the bus station in Alcobaça, which is situated on Avenida Manuel da Silva Carolino, visitors can reach the main square by taking a leisurely 5-minute walk down Rua Dom Pedro V and turning left. The TI, located at Rua 16 de Outubro 9, is situated between the Monastery and the must-visit market.

Our group had a great time at the market in Alcobaça. We bought a range of delicious items, including fresh fruit, dried and fresh figs, cashews, various types of cheese, and pastries. We gathered all of these goodies to enjoy as snacks during our next stop in Nazaré.
